    The Show

We decided to come together and use our creativity for a cause as we save materials from the landfill and create beautiful one of a kind wearable art! We create art out of unexpected, redesigned, and reclaimed materials. With all of the mass produced and industrially manufactured "stuff" in the world, there is so much waste left over. We might as well turn this into something beautiful and sustainable, while we work together and and draw inspiration from each other in a creative atmosphere.

We put our varying skills and visions together this past spring when we organized an upcycled fashion and art show on May 1st, 2010. We called out for all kinds of artists and designers under 19 to submit creations made from recycled materials and to turn this into a collection for the show, and each collection was built around a theme. Each designer had 4 - 10 fashion pieces and there was also a beautiful array of art pieces and recycled accessories.
The materials were donated from Kitchen Table Arts at Nelson's WIN Second Hand Store, whose proceeds go towards the Women In Need Society. The show was held at Self Design High in Nelson, BC.

The fashion show was a success with flying colors, and really goes to show what a group of dedicated youth are capable of if they concentrate their creativity. The collaboration of so many different young artists created an extraordinary variation of styles was what made the show so interesting and what reinforced the idea that "anything goes" and that creativity doesn't fit into a box. The differing body types in the models, inspirations of the designers, and different collections was a strong point in the show. And this unusual assortment could not have happened had we not been using recycled material , because the recycled material made for really unique and one of a kind pieces.
The fashion show we held inspired the whole community, especially youth. It really sparked some creative ideas as people were asking questions and asking about how they could get involved and still do to this day, months later. The show was not only an opportunity to show off our designs, but to spread awareness about the availability and diversity, and most importantly the overall environmental benefits of using recycled materials. Attendees were extremely impressed to hear that the show was entirely youth organized.
